Episode 115: The Perfect Heist

It’s 2016 and we’re now living the future. Okay, maybe not the future where robots are raiding spaceshipe like in this episode’s titular game SteamWorld Heist, but a future that will bring us Nintendo’s NX and a whole lot of anniversary celebrations. So for this edition of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we’re sharing our predictions of 2016’s biggest stories, starting with a breakdown of new reports on what the NX could be and when it will be released. We then discuss the onslaught of video game anniversaries this year, including Pokemon’s 20th and some interesting rumors surrounding Sonic The Hedgehog’s 25th, plus what Nintendo World’s transformation into Nintendo NY may mean for future Nintendo stores. The show then concludes with our impressions of SteamWorld Heist for 3DS.

  1. Hey Jason, Angel, and Elvis!

Wonderful show as always! Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into it, its all very appreciated!

I totally agree with your prediction Jason, if the NX comes out this year, it’ll be the last weekend before Thanksgiving, I think you’ve made a very-safe bet. And if the NX doesn’t come out this year, as much as I love Nintendo, its going to be a very sad year. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love the 3DS and Wii U, but given what we’ve seen in terms of releases thus far, any Nintendo-centric games will be few and far between. For example, there is that rumor this past week (from I think Amazon France?) that Star Fox Zero got pushed to July. That wouldn’t be good. All of I can think of at the moment is, Pokken Tournament, Star Fox Zero, and Zelda(?) as the only first-party Wii U games. So something else has to be happening this year.

On the other hand, the 3DS seems like its in for a decent to good year.I’m particularly excited for Fire Emblem Fates right now, was just thinking the other day how ready I am for the game to come out. I don’t remember, are any of you big-time Fire Emblems fans? Personally I’ve been playing the series since the GBA days.

Oh and my biggest hope/prediction for 2016 is that the NX does come out! Oh and it being a dual, home/portable unit would be really awesome!

Anyways, thanks again for all you do, can’t wait for the next episode!

    1. Not sure how I missed your comment before now, but thanks as always!

Luckily, it seems the rumors of a Star Fox delay aren’t true, at least in the US. When Nintendo put out a press release confirming amiibo support for the game, they repeated the April 22 release date. Of course anything can change between now and then, but that confirmation came after the rumor. So there’s hope!

As for Fire Emblem, back in the GBA days I was more of an Advance Wars guy myself. Awakening was the first entry in the series I bought, and I really enjoyed it – peg-legged characters and all. I’ve already got the special edition of Fates preordered, too. Which version are you picking up?

      1. Hey Jason!

No worries at all, figured life was keeping you busy, like it does to all of us.

Anyways, I am glad that Star Fox as of now isn’t delayed. That could change, but at least for the U.S. Star Fox is an April game. Perhaps the Amazon France leak actually does apply to Europe. Either way, I’m still not sure if Star Fox is a game for me, I haven’t actually enjoyed a Star Fox game since Star Fox 64, for now I think I’ll wait and see how the game looks when it comes out and see what the reviews say about it.

I’m glad you enjoyed Awakening! Its definitely the most user-friendly, easiest to approach version of the franchise. Thats not to say I don’t like Advance Wars either, you can’t really go wrong with that series either. I’m particularly fond of Advance Wars Dual Strike from the DS. I think for me, I just liked the more character-driven design of Fire Emblem better. Still a new Advance Wars game would be nice. I have the Special Edition of Fates pre-ordered as well. I’m planning to side with Hoshido first, what about you?

        1. Yeah, the thing about Advance Wars was that it always felt like lighter fare than Fire Emblem, both in terms of story and how it values (or doesn’t value) each unit you have on the battlefield.

For Fates, I’m going to first side with Hoshido as well and ease my way in. It would feel like going backwards if I started with the harder Nohr side.
