Episode 134: Keeping It Classic

The Nintendo 64 turns 20. The NES is back in miniature form. 80s arcade-style gaming is alive and well on the eShop. If there’s one phrase that sums up this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, it’s “what’s old is new again.” We start off with the latest on the NES Classic Edition, taking a look at just how authentic it will be to its larger 80s cousin. We then look towards NX, analyzing recent comments from top Pokemon Company and Ubisoft executives and what they may mean about the mysterious console. From there we switch to software, bringing you the latest on Pokemon Sun & Moon and early theories about the newly announced Runner3, followed by impressions of the Wii U’s questionable First Skunk Bundle and Nindie arcade throwback SphereZor. The show then concludes with a celebration of the N64’s 20th anniversary, including our favorite memories of the system and a discussion of how it’s still relevant to Nintendo two decades later.

  1. Hey Jason and Angel!

Wonderful show as always! I’m so sorry, I haven’t been commenting again before the next new episode. I feel really bad about that. Anyways, just want you to know that all your hard work is really appreciated!

I loved your look back at the N64 while other Nintendo consoles have had better game line-ups, namely the SNES, the N64 is my personal favorite.Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64 (still the best Mario Kart), and Rogue Squadron are some of my favorite games from the console. Oh and WCW vs. NWO. That was a great multi-player party game.

Oh and I feel like I learned something new, I wasn’t aware that Ubisoft was trying to be bought out. Totally understandable why they are trying to drum up support then. Oh and thanks for the explanation of the “First Skunk Bundle.” Sounds like a real rip-off.

I noticed in your headline for the newest episode you posted today, that still no NX news, well maybe its grasping at straws, but I’m hoping in the rumor/statement made by Macquarie Group (banking firm) that the NX is suposed to be unveiled this coming week on the 21st. Again, maybe its grasping at straws, but I want to believe. Or it could always be brought up (at least the “official-concept”) at the Investor’s Meeting on the 26th of the month.

Anyways, thanks again for a great show, looking forward to listening to the new one later today. Thanks again!

    1. No need to apologize! Glad to hear you’re still enjoying the show. 🙂

It’s starting to sound like Macquarie Group might be right about NX news soon, if not this week then next. The typical insiders are now saying it’s coming this week, and if that falls through, there’s bound to be something at Nintendo’s financial briefing next week.

I totally forgot about not just WCW vs. NWO, but all the wrestling games N64 had. In retrospect, it really was the go-to multiplayer system of its generation. GoldenEye, Mario Kart, Smash, Mario Party… the list goes on and on!
