‘Tis the season where you cram as much as you can into a sock. In this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we’re doing that in the figurative sense with a grab bag of gaming goodies as we share our Games of the Year picks and impressions of both TowerFall on Switch and Pokemon Go’s new Trainer Battles. We also dive into the latest holiday sales numbers from Nintendo, revisit Smash Bros. Ultimate, and yes, talk about Sonic’s overly toned legs. If this episode was a stocking, it’d be absolutely stuffed.

And just like any good stocking, it contains a gift! We’re giving away a $20 eShop gift card to one lucky commenter. As longtime listeners of the show may know, Jason has a reputation of never finishing his games. Now, we want to know which of your games you somehow never got to and why. Maybe you started but simply didn’t finish; or perhaps you never even took it out of the box. Whatever the most outlandish reason you have, let’s hear it! Leave a comment below telling us your game and reason, and we’ll highlight our favorites – and pick one lucky gift card winner – in our next episode on January 9. To make sure you don’t miss it, be sure to follow us on Twitter @RandomNintendo and subscribe to us on Apple PodcastsSpotify, Stitcher, Google Play Music, YouTube, or your podcasting app of choice.

As always, we’ve included links below for more information on the news and games discussed in this episode. Each link also lists a time stamp to easily locate the segments that most interest you. Enjoy!

  1. metal gear rising revengeance is a game that i never finished when i was a kid cuz i couldn’t beat the last boss since the game saved with a low health bar and also cuz i didn’t know how to cut in half the things Senator Armstrong throw at you, i could have started over from the beginning of the boss battle but i just didn’t feel like it, i am sure i would be able to finish the game now tho

  2. One game that I never finished was A Legend of Zelda – Link to the Past. At the time, I got lost after getting into the dark world and pretty much gave up after the third dark world dungeon. I do want to get back to finishing it one day however.

  3. I have a really big backlog: Zombie U, Rayman Origins, a bunch of Etrian Odyssey games. This year i finished Final Fantasy V and VI lol. Now Playing: Fire Emblem for Game Boy Advanced. I want to finish many classic games like Secret of Mana and Metroid Fusion.

  4. Great prompt! Two on Switch: Yooka Laylee and Hollow Knight. I’m a huge fan of the Banjo Kazooie games and that era of platformers, but I could barely get 2 hours into Yooka Laylee before getting bored of it and stopping. I had beat Odyssey just before, so to be fair to YL I was holding it to an impossible standard. For Hollow Kight, I love Metroidvania games and really like its art style… but I just didnt really enjoy that game for some reason. I should really like both of those games, so I intend to go back and finish (or at least put more effort into) them at some point!

  5. I never finished Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded. I’m a big fan of the Kingdom Hearts series and I liked the game, but I had bought it shortly before Super Smash Bros. came out on the 3DS. After I got Smash Bros., I decided I would finish Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded later. But then Pokemon Alpha Sapphire was released and I became preoccupied with that and so on with various new release games throughout the years. So many games, so little time. One of these days I might go back to finish Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded, but that day isn’t today because my gaming time is currently dedicated to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

  6. I never beat Viewtiful Joe. Now I never owned the game , but I would play the Toys R Us plcopy from their demo/play station. I would just sit there for hours on end trying to beat it. Hopefully it will get remade some day cause I want to complete the game. Always thought it was cool just never got around to it, so I hope it gets remade.

  7. I really, really loved Zelda Majora’s Mask as a kid, but for some reason I actually never could bet the final boss. I remember in those early days having a friend over trying to beat him for a whole day and we failed, and that was it. Such a sad story though, I never saw the ending until this day. This teaches a lesson: Never give up on something, you may regret it later!
