Extra: The Sights of Comic-Con 2014
Come for the video games, stay for the movies, TV shows, and comics. Comic-Con is always a unique mash-up of pop culture and this year’s show was no different. We spent four days running around San Diego, and now bring you a photo gallery packed with all the craziness we saw. The 50 photos below cover everything from Nintendo’s showing to third-party publishers to giant woolly creatures just hanging out on the street.
Nintendo had a large presence at this year’s show, once again splitting its attendance between a booth in the exhibition hall and a lounge in the neighboring Marriott hotel. Unlike past years, however, Nintendo chose to theme the majority of its Comic-Con activities around competitive play. Gone were the numerous photo ops of Comic-Con 2013, instead replaced with daily Mario Kart 8 competitions, a Smash Bros. 3DS tournament, and a livestreamed “Nintendo Challenge” show. Video games extended beyond just Nintendo, too. Life-size Skylanders roamed the show floor, Ubisoft promoted Assassin’s Creed Unity with a huge parkour obstacle course, and Sega set up Sonic Boom demos at nearby Nerd HQ.
You can see all these sights, plus additional ones like a giant Homer Simpson head and real-life Gotham police cars, in the gallery below. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to also listen to our hands-on impressions of the games of Comic-Con in Episode 76, where we’re giving away a Comic-Con exclusive Smash Bros. shirt that you don’t want to miss.
