Episode 145: Switched On
Welcome to the Switch era. Nintendo’s hybrid system has officially launched, and we’re celebrating with an absolutely jam-packed episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast. It all starts with the Switch’s day-one offerings as we share in-depth impressions of the hardware and launch titles 1-2-Switch, Snipperclips, and Super Bomberman R (don’t worry, Zelda impressions are coming next episode). We then look at what’s ahead for all those new Switches out there, from our most anticipated indie titles from last week’s Nindies Showcase to hands-on time at the Switch Preview Tour with ARMS, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Sonic Mania. Plus, we lick Switch cartridges on air and immediately regret it.
The launch celebration doesn’t stop there, though. We’re also giving you chance to win a $20 eShop code! Simply leave a comment below telling us your favorite thing about the Switch (no, Zelda doesn’t count), and one commenter will be chosen at random to receive the code. We’ll announce the winner in our next episode, as well as share some of our favorite comments. To make sure you don’t miss it, be sure to subscribe to us on iTunes, Google Play Music, or your favorite podcasting app and follow us on Twitter @RandomNintendo.
As always, we’ve included links below for more information on the news and games discussed in this episode. Each link also lists a time stamp so you can easily find the segments that most interest you. Enjoy and Happy Switching!

My favorite thing about the Switch is the portability. I know that’s the whole angle of it and not really original, but I love being able to play while on lunch break at work or when I travel. As I’ve become an adult I’ve played more handheld gaming due to the portability of it, so I’m so stoked to have that feature with my favorite console titles.
I love how portable it is. It’s more than I was expecting. I can play in my bedroom on the TV, then pick it up to go to the Living Room or Kitchen and keep playing. Then, I can just plug into the dock in my Living Room and continue playing. No additional hookups, no codes, no odd pairing issues, just dock it in another room and I’m good to go. This makes this consile highly portable and easy to move around.
Now, if only I could get more battery out of it for Zelda.
Hey Jason and Angel, I’ve been enjoying the podcast for the past couple of years. It’s been refreshing to hear your positivity even during the dark days of the WiiU. Anyway, I think my favorite aspect of the Switch right now is the portability. Every Sunday my family gets together at Mom’s for dinner, and the ability to easily grab the Switch and have a couple controllers ready is awesome. My nephew always used to ask me to bring over the WiiU and is was such a pain to disconnect everything and pack it up to bring it over that I rarely did it. Now it’s incredibly easy and we’re already making our way through Snipperclips and loving it. I hope everyone else is enjoying the Switch and hopefully your new dock arrives shortly Jason.
Hi Jason and Angel, thanks for doing the podcast as always and for the competition. I like that the console is a hybrid. It is a good on tv experience, but you can take it with you and it is a really nice mobile experience. That is my favorite switch feature, dock, and undock. The Joy cons are awesome, but if the console could not “switch” I don’t think they would be as killer as they are. It is the whole package and the switch nature to me.
Runner up feature is the instant on, instant play, instant off, it is so quick to get in play and go.
I’m really loving how fast the UI and the menu system is on the Switch. Using an Amiibo to transfer my mii from my WiiU to the Switch really highlighted this. It almost feels like the Gameboy days where you just press a button and you are movin. Also the screen is glorious and looks like an IMAX in your hands when playing portably.
My favorite feature of the Switch is that I don’t have to buy it.
Kidding. Sort of. It’ll probably be a better system once more games are released and they smooth out some of the issues they’ve been having with early units.
Fav feature is bombing the bathroom while playing Super Bomberman R.
My favorite feature is portable mode and the ease and speed of sleep mode!
My favorite feature is the portability. My lunch breaks are much more enjoyable now at work.
I like how the tablet function works and it’s easy to take it with you.
Definitely the portability. When I fly back back home, the flight takes about 10-12 hours, so the the Switch is the perfect device to have during those dreadful hours. I am anticipating to see what Nintendo has in store for the Switch (game-wise). Crossing my fingers for a Pokemon game on the Switch.
My favorite feature from the switch is the accessibility, and the different control options.
My favorite thing about the Switch is the chance/hope of third-party support coming back; hopefully won’t have to wait months for a new game being released.
Oh, and the portability
My favorite thing is the various ways to use the Joy-Con’s. Hold them separately, keep them in the grip. Even they can Switch.
Best feature is the portability! Can’t wait to play Zelda in HD on the go!
I don’t think the the split joy con configuration gets enough love. Pull those puppies apart and snuggle up in any position you want for maximum comfort.
I like the various Joy Con configurations. You could be playing with one Joy Con in each hand, then give one to a friend to play a two player mode.
I like the system’s portability. And I like that more than one person can use the joy cons.
I really like that you can detach the Joy-Cons. I hated the Wii U gamepad for not having that ability.
My favorite feature is the system being a HD portable system.Playing Zelda,Mario xenoblade on the go is gonna be amazing. With Nintendo, you know there’s gonna be alot of amazing first party IP games that I’ll be able to play on the go like I do with my 3ds 🙂
Loving the right Joy-Con configuration with the lower stick! Genius! Can reach and use all of the buttons while controlling the camera with the heal of your thumb. Stunning design!
The joy-con configurations are the best part.
Now I would say the best feature of the switch is it’s portability (which is excellent by the way) but for me the best feature is the fact the switch is region free, now I’ll never miss out on USA or Japanese releases on eshop or physical releases.an absolute godsend for me in the uk
I love how great the graphics look on it and using it as a portable device.
I love being able to actually game on big releases when I want to. Usually I don’t have the time because I’m busy with one thing or the other. It’s nice to have big release Nintendo games on a portable system.
Thanks for entering, everyone! Stay tuned for our winner announcement in our next episode this Sunday.
My favorite Thing about the Switch is Legend of Zelda Breath of the wild. A true masterpiece of a game.
My favorite is the exclusive games like Zelda: BotW
My FAVOURITE FEATURE of the Switch is that it turns ON or OFF the TV when you turn the Switch ON or OFF while in DOCKED MODE!!
May have to enable it in the settings for some.
