Episode 164: Let’s Get Physical
‘Tis the season to see a lot of family, and if you don’t want to be stuck talking politics with your crazy uncle, you’ll need something to do. Luckily, that’s where games come in! And in this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we’re highlighting great ones for groups, both physical and virtual. This includes a podcast first as we venture into the world of Nintendo-themed board games with Clue: The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Level Up!, and the Super Mario Power Up Card Game. We also share impressions of new Switch titles worth gathering around, including Monopoly, Super Beat Sports, Inversus Deluxe, and Astro Duel Deluxe. Plus, we check out what’s new in Splatoon 2, ARMS, and Super Bomberman R, as well as discuss the loot box controversy and rumors of a Mario movie from the studio behind Minions.
This episode also marks our sixth anniversary, and to celebrate, we’re hosting a massive giveaway! You can win all three physical games discussed in this episode – Clue: The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario: Level Up!, and the Super Mario Power Up Card Game – plus a $20 eShop gift card! Believe it not, Mario Chase from Nintendo Land still gets me and my family rolling on the floor laughing. Being able to tackle a Mii that’s a dead ringer for your annoying cousin will never ever lose it’s delightful flavor. Happy Holidays.
Monopoly on the Switch and Super Bomberman R. Both great family games to play during the holiday.
Rummikub is our family go to game. Its pretty unknown, but the rules are simple and the game is very addicting.
Monopoly because nothing brings out togetherness like teaming up on the richest person in the game.
Apples to Apples all the way. Come to think of it, I’m a bit surprised there’s not a video game equivelant.
I love playing Jackbox Party Packs with the family. If we’re keeping it board game, nothing beats backstabbing in RISK.
Mario Kart 8 it’s one of the few games more than one membe rof my family can play without it being a case of a guaranteed winner and loser.
Monopoly for sure! Been playing it together with my family since I was a kid and there is ALWAYS someone who gets salty and Quits or trys to flip the board over and ruin it for everyone(Yes I may be guilty of this one haha :P)
Mario platformer games for the console! Party’s a bit too wacky for our tastes and Kart’s only my favorite.
For board games we either play Rummikub or Dominos (dbl 6, dbl 9, triominos, or quadominos). With video games, the go-tos are the Knack series or fighting games (KOF XIV, Persona 4 Arena are the favorites).
For videogames it’s Super Smash Bros. of course, and for board games it’s monopoly. We can get very competitive…
Video game – Mario Party
Board/Card game – Cards Against Humanity
When it comes to video games, the Jackbox Party Packs are currently the crowd favorite. I appreciate how they allow even long-distance friends & family to participate, despite being able to attend in person.
Our preferences on physical board & card games vary too wildly to declare a clear adult favorite, but the game of Uno is easily the most requested by the children in our group.
When it comes to Fun there are two games that come to mind in our house. First – Super Bomber Man. Oh The Humanity ! It gets crazy up in here. I’ve converted my whole family to the whole series ! But not too far in Second is Monopoly Deal . The fits of rage and satisfaction of winning in one game is EPIC ! hehe . We play tons of games be it digital or not ! It brings us closer together :O)
We play a card game call Nerts.
We also always have the n64 hooked up with super smash brothers on it.
Happy 6th Anniversary, Random Nintendo! I can’t believe that it’s been going on for so long! I have really been enjoying the show and love to hear your insight, as it usually helps me make some decisions when I can’t find a response in other places.
Well, on to the answer to the question of the day: I started getting Monopoly Gamer going with my family. I have the collector’s edition, so I love the plastic coins, instead of the cardboard cutouts. And as soon as everyone saw that there were a few blank spaces in my board, they asked about the extra characters and got excited to know that there is so much more that can be added to the game! I also have Scythe going, Uno! Mario Edition, Jackbox Party Pack 3, and (believe it or not) Nintendoland still gets a ton of playtime at this time of year.
I just got the D&D Starter Pack, so I’m pretty sure that this will give us more game time, but I would love to throw some more Nintendo board games in the mix.
Keep up the great work, guys! Love hearing you guys on a bi-weekly basis.
Also, loved the Game & Watch intro! First time hearing it, even though I’ve been listening for quite some time.
Jackbox Pary Pack is good contender, but best game together probably goes to Mysterium (like Clue, but even better).
Spoons! Loser takes a shot, but most of my wife’s family always cheats. Instead of trying to win, they try not to lose, and spend most of the time watching to see if someone is going to make a grab. Growing up it was Balderdash and Taboo.
Tbh I work the majority of the holiday season and my family is that spread out or doing their own things that I don’t really get to see anyone so keep myself occupied playing Video games on my off days but before my partner passed we’d spend hours having a laugh on Nintendo land when I got back from a busy day at work…well it was a choice of Nintendo land or monopoly which she use to be great at and I dispise as I’m rubbish at it.lol
In our house, a tournament style of Super Smash Bros reigns supreme. Board games, it comes down to either Sorry or Risk.
family game day in my house starts with yahtzee and ends with clue. starting at 10am-7pm.it’s alot of fun running the gambit of games all day. game on everyone
We always play Earth Defense Force since it has couch co-op. For Nintendo stuff, Mario Kart.
Ticket to Ride, King of Tokyo, or Colt Express are some of my favorite family board games to play.
Monopoly!
Jackbox is always a good time with crude jokes
Video Game: Mario Kart
Board Game: Telestrations.
My favorite holiday family game is Zelda! Alone in a corner away from the family (if they’re being dysfunctional, lol)! That said, in most other cases, as a group, I like Monopoly too. So I’m excited to have it on the Switch this Christmas. 🙂
Congrats on 6 years, guys!
My favorite game to play with family around the holidays is “Avoid 99% of the Smug Jerks” hahaha usually holiday time is spent with my wife and dogs, try to go see my mom and her fiancee and then the wife’s family. But games? Mine plays so many over the course of the year that I get my fill. Although I beat them this year at one when I dropped the bombshell I have a rare Asian disease in my neck. I’m not Asian nor of Asian descent
Monopoly because nothing said holidays like ruining relationships between cousins by making them paying you gobs of money.
I cannot count the hours me and my friends have burned through playing Drawful. There’s a certain magic to badly drawing undrawable things and witnessing the headaches you cause.
I have to go with Monopoly or Yahtzee
I do like to play Mário Kart 8 Deluxe with my family
Thanks for entering, everyone! Stay tuned for the winner announcement in tomorrow’s new episode.
I always love playing smash bros with my family and DESTROYING THEM!!!!
