Great episode! Shout-out to Angel for the perfect use of “bazinga” for censoring this episode. It felt very random until Jason mentioned the-show-that-must-not-be-named and then made perfect sense.
Love the discussion on spin-offs! Especially The Paper getting some love. I really enjoyed that show too. (Coming back Sept. 9, which fittingly they announced the same day as this episode dropped!) Also fun random fact: Parks and Rec WAS originally meant to be a spin-off of The Office! It had to do with sending a broken printer or something from Dunder Mifflin Scranton to Pawnee? NBC wanted a spin-off so that was the original premise, but it became its own thing.
My answer is boring but my favorite spin-off is the prime example: Frasier. It’s just so clever and well-written, and Niles is one of the best acted and scripted characters in sitcom history.
Games-wise, I’d go with Pokemon Legends Arceus, if that counts. Though that will hopefully be replaced by Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy later this month! It’s a prequel but focused on a side character and different gameplay style so I feel like it counts as a spin-off?
Loved Brand New Day! Really enjoyed not having any multiverse stuff and being so focused and small scale. Also felt like the perfect follow-up to No Way Home, and especially loved the very end scene. Like Jason said, the extra MCU characters didn’t feel forced. I’m biased but I really enjoyed what they did with Frank.
Closing this novel of a post with the most recent new non-IP I’ve watched: The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins. HIGHLY recommend it! Daniel Radcliffe and Tracy Morgan are somehow a perfect comedy match, and it’s absolutely hilarious.

Clearly The Paper’s season 2 announcement happened because someone over at Peacock listened to the show and needed to quell our concerns — clearly! But that’s interesting about Parks initially being a genuine spin-off, I had no idea. And I’ve been meaning to check out Reggie Dinkins, so I’ll definitely need to take you up on that suggestion.
I would say both your game examples count as spin-offs, Arceus being a particularly good choice. But if there’s one thing this episode taught me, it’s that maybe I shouldn’t trust my own definition of “spin-off”…
