Episode 143: Playing With Fire

Well, it finally happened. Nintendo went full free-to-play with the release of Fire Emblem Heroes, adding time limits and “gacha” mechanics to their game. But is it as bad as it sounds? In this episode of the Random Nintendo Podcast, we share our impressions of Fire Emblem Heroes and the similarly-structured, surprise mobile release Pokemon Duel. There’s also more traditional Nintendo gaming to discuss as we pick our most anticipated third-party Switch games and cover the latest on 3DS titles like Fire Emblem Echoes and Mario Sports Supermix. Plus, we break down all the news and numbers from Nintendo’s holiday quarter financial briefing.

  1. Hey guys, I tried Fire Emblem Heroes after never playing a Fire Emblem game before. After less than an hour of gameplay I was looking up the latest games to buy for my 3DS. I’m so interested in this series now and excited to try the core games! For a free-to-play game it’s pretty good, but more importantly for Nintendo is it got a non-Fire Emblem fan interested enough that I’m going to buy Awakening. So for me it was a success because I could try a new franchise for free, and for them it truly worked too as it was like a gateway drug to their core games. Keep up the great work as we Switch to the new age of Nintendo!

    1. Thanks, Kurt!

Sounds like Nintendo’s strategy is working. The more I play Fire Emblem Heroes, the more it really does feel like the perfect introduction for new players. It’ll be interesting to see how Nintendo replicates that feeling with Animal Crossing for mobile.
